The Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis – Ontario Division is made up of a group of health-care professionals (physicians, psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists, etc.) who is interested in promoting the use of clinical hypnosis to the highest ethical and practical standards. The members of the Board of Directors and Committees work to create opportunities for training in hypnosis to licenced health-care professionals, inform the public about the benefits of clinical hypnosis, and provide a variety of additional information and support to the CSCH-OD membership.
CSCH-OD is a component member of ASCH (American Society of Clinical Hypnosis) and has strong ties with other organizations such as the Society for Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis (SCEH), and the Canadian Federation of Clinical Hypnosis – Quebec (CFCH). The SCEH Journal is available to CSCH-OD members.

The Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis – Ontario Division is an organization of professionals who study and practise clinical hypnosis to help our clients and patients experience desired changes in behaviour, emotions, habits, health, and lifestyle.
Our mission statement is: To promote the use of hypnosis in clinical practice by regulated health professionals, according to the highest ethical principles, through education and training, collegial support, and liaison with other professional hypnosis societies.
All of our members are registered or licensed with a professional college to practise medicine, psychology, social work, psychotherapy, dentistry, chiropractic, nursing, etc. We do not train “lay hypnotists”, who are not professionals and therefore not registered with a college. It is essential that professionals practise within their scope of practice and have training in the ethical use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
After the demise of the previous hypnosis society, the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis – Ontario Division began in 2002 when a small group of professionals organized a symposium. At this symposium, Dr. Dabney Ewin, an esteemed psychiatrist who uses hypnotherapy in his practice, presented a workshop on the use of hypnosis in treating psychosomatic disorders.
Focusing its attention on offering certified training in clinical hypnosis to health care professionals, the society has presented annual workshops at the Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced levels. Using the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) training model as a guideline, CSCH-OD has invited distinguished researchers and practitioners such as Dr. Leora Kuttner, Dr. Claire Frederick, Dr. Mark P. Jensen, Dr. Carol Ginandes, and others to provide interactive workshops on a variety of topics of interest to the health care community. In recent years attendees to the workshops have received CME credits awarded by the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine’s Continuing Education Department. In 2012 CSCH-OD hosted a joint Symposium with SCEH (Society for Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis) in Toronto which included presentations on clinical applications, as well as research.
The volunteer Board of CSCH-OD continues to provide opportunities for quality training and support to all who seek to use clinical hypnosis in their professional practice.
